My daughter is going to have surgery for adolescent hip dysplasia. What should we be seeing in terms of recovery?

All patients recover from surgery in their own way, some quickly, some slowly. In general, however, patients who have surgery on their hip are not allowed to do full weight-bearing for several weeks (often about six weeks), when they can then begin to bear weight slowly. Anyone who has hip surgery, such as repair of dysplasia, will be given physiotherapy exercises to strengthen the muscles around the hip. If the hip dysplasia has been present for a while, the muscles were not being used properly and then the surgery affects the muscle strength and ability as well. Your daughter will be followed and assessed by the surgeon, using x-rays and some tests, such as measuring her gait, to see how her progress is going.
