How come doctors can't tell the difference between a regular back ache and one that won't go away after a while?

Back pain, especially in the lower back, can be very complicated. If the cause of the back pain is muscular or something that is very obvious, then doctors are usually able to identify it and offer the right treatments. However, not all causes are obvious and what may seem simple and clear, may not be in the long run. When you see a doctor about back pain, you're usually asked a lot of questions about your lifestyle so he or she can assess if the pain is being caused or made worse by some of your every day activities. X-rays and other diagnostic tests will show doctors if there is anything that can be actually seen, such as a fracture or a slipped disc. However, even despite the most thorough examination, it's not always possible to tell what causes the pain and if the pain will be long lasting.
