I'm 72-years old and like to be active. I've had rheumatoid arthritis for 35 years. After a total hip and a total knee joint replacement, I find it much more difficult to take long walks. What can I do to regain this ability?

You may want to consider an exercise program in the pool. This is an excellent way to build up strength and endurance without the effects of gravity. The warm water also relaxes the muscles and reduces joint pain and stiffness. You can transfer those skills on land by slowly increasing the distance walked. Many people use some support such as a cane during long walks. This enables them to increase their distance safely.
