I am a 45 year old man and have recently been diagnosed with a “collapsed hip” from “femoral head necrosis.” My doctor says that I will need a hip replacement surgery.  I thought this was something only very old people got. Is there an alternative treatment?

While there are some treatment alternatives, such as bone grafts or decompression surgery, none are recommended for a collapsed femoral head; the gold standard treatment is a total hip replacement.  You are correct to realize that the life of the hardware is concerning since you are younger, however the hardware typically lasts greater than 6 years and a recent review found 94 per cent of replacements lasting an average of 16 years.
