I am a high school basketball player and recently really jammed my middle finger during practice. The tip of my finger is hanging funny. It hurt really bad at first, but now doesn’t. It just gets caught on things, which is annoying. My Mom thinks I need to go to the doctor. My question is what could they do for it and if I don’t, what could happen?

You are describing what sounds like is a mallet finger injury, where tendons in the tip of your finger have torn and are no longer functioning. While this is a mere nuisance now, if its not addressed it could progress into a worse deformity, called a swan-neck deformity. Traumatically induced finger deformities respond well to quick, conservative intervention, which for you means a splint for several weeks.
