I'm a little worried. I had a car accident and ruptured my spleen and broke my wrist in three places. I was in the hospital for a week and had two operations. Every time the doctors came to see me, I could see my bill piling up and up. Do doctors charge for every visit they make in the hospital?

It depends on the doctor and the type of insurance you have. If you are covered by a health maintenance (HMO) plan, the doctor doesn't charge by the visit. If you have a fee-for-service plan, the doctor may charge for each visit.

Some doctors don't charge for the follow-up visit on the same day as the operation. Most do charge a limited visit for the daily rounds they make. The only way to know for sure is to review your type of insurance coverage. Then contact your doctor's office and speak with the billing agent.

Most doctors are willing to work out a payment plan that suits your budget and finances. There may or may not be an interest charge assessed for the balance due after 60 days, 90 days, or beyond.
