My mother had high blood pressure and fell at age 86. She broke her hip and never recovered. I'm getting a little worried about myself as I see my blood pressure start to rise. Is there any way I can keep all this from happening to me?

Aging is inevitable but some problems with aging can be slowed or prevented. Blood pressure rises as we get older because the blood vessels are stiffer. This gives more resistance to the blood trying to pass through. Atherosclerosis also slows blood flow down. The body tries to help by increasing the pressure of the blood to get it through.

Diet and exercise are the two key strategies to prevent the kind of health problems you mention. Weight gain and an inactive lifestyle are also linked to increased blood pressure and falls. Likewise, a healthy diet and staying active are the best medicine for these problems.

Have your blood pressure checked regularly. See a medical doctor for regular care. Ask your doctor for help getting started. There are many programs available in most communities to help guide adults in keeping fit. Find out what these are in your area and make use of them.

Scientists studying health problems support what Ben Franklin once said, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
