Can nails and screws used to fix broken bones be seen by x-ray and can they set off metal detectors?

Implants and hardware used to fix broken bones do show up on x-ray. This is important because of a doctor is working on you, he or she has to know where the hardware is located. As for metal detectors, if all you have are screws, nails or plates, chances are they won't be detected by airport security detectors, although it does happen from time to time. Implants, such as for the knee or hip, tend to be detected more often. According to the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons, in one study, all hip replacements were detected and 90 percent of total knee replacements were detected. If you're concerned about being stopped at the airport, it might be best to carry a doctor's note describing the type of implant or hardware you have in your body. It's not a guarantee that there won't be any problems, but it might help clear the path.
