I was told that I have disc degeneration in my low back. How can my doctor know this?

Your doctor likely ordered an Xray or MRI of your spine. The disc space or height between the vertebra is evaluated. If it is shorter than expected, or in the case of the MRI the disc is dark, a diagnosis of disc degeneration is made.
