Now that we have airbags, can seatbelts be eliminated?

Not with the current restraint system. Airbags aren't released during minor mishaps. This is when the seatbelt is the only restraint to prevent injury.

Studies show airbags work best when used along with a seatbelt. When comparing seatbelts alone to airbags alone, seatbelts are better. Seatbelts help prevent serious injuries to the face, chest, and pelvis. Neck injuries are still possible.

Car companies are continuing to look for ways to make a better restraint system, one that protects the whole body from head to toe.
