My 14-year-old son got hit really hard in his thigh at football practice yesterday. There is now a big, hard mass underneath his skin and he has a nasty bruise. Is there anything I can do to help this? We went to the doctor and he had an x-ray which showed no break.

It sounds like your son has a hematoma, or significant bruise in one of his main thigh muscles. While his body will more than likely take care of itself, you can help him along with regular ice, compression, elevation, and resting. Icing should be applied for 15 to 20 minutes every 30 to 60 minutes for 48 to 72 hours. A physical therapist will be able to help beyond this for gradual return to exercise and restored muscle function.
