I am an active 40-year-old male and have had persistent knee pain for awhile now. My x-rays show some degeneration in my joint. Physical therapy alleviates some of the pain but there still is that dull nagging ache every now and then. Are there options other than a new knee joint?

A recent review of the literature suggests that for a very specific population (mild joint degeneration, younger population, and not a significant malalignment present) arthroscopic debridement is more beneficial than a total joint replacement. Also, as a younger patient, you would not be considered very eligible for a total joint replacement since the hardware typically needs replaced after 10 years.
