Radial Shortening for Kienbock Disease Effective for Most Patients

in

Kienbock disease, a disorder where the blood supply fails to reach the small bones in the wrist, causing bone cell death, often feels at first like a sprained wrist. Unfortunately, unlike a sprained wrist, Kienbock disease needs treatment to remove the damaged part of the bone. To do this, surgeons have been performing a procedure called radial osteotomy, where they remove part of the bone.

My husband's Workers' Compensation case manager insists he is ready to return-to-work. He bases this claim on the fact that my husband can ride a bike and go golfing with the kids. The problem is that his job doesn't require biking and golfing. He's supposed to lift 50 to 70 pound packages while twisting and turning. How can we get this point across to the case reviewer?

in

You've hit upon a problem that faces many Workers' Compensation claimants. Functional status, limitations, and abilities/disabilities can be very different between home and work. And tests to measure function don't always address these types of limitations.

No Statistical Difference Between Arthoscopic and Open Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex Tears

in

The triangular fibrocartilage is found on the wrist across the two bones in the forearm. The cartilage allows the arm to move smoothly. If this cartilage is torn, the injury can have severe effects on the use of the arm and hand. Currently, acute tears, ones that happened suddenly, are treated by bracing or casting the arm, or by surgery.

Wrist fusion with remaining pain in naviculare + Pisiform or triangular bone area pain

Dear Sir Madam

I had an accident in 2002, Os naviculare-Fracture & Distal Radius Fracture which was first treated conservatively and then with later with screws & external metalwork after it moved.

I have had severe chronic pain (CRPS1) for 6 years, and this has lead to the following operation.

I recently had a wrist fusion to my left wrist and at the 6 week point I found out that the wrist was not in the position that was expected (now neutral position).

My sister's daughter had broken her scaphoid bone after falling during a soccer game. It didn't look broken and she didn't look as if she was in a lot of pain so my sister didn't get it checked. It was only a day later that my niece went to a doctor and she was told her hand was broken. What signs should we have watched out for?

in

Sometimes, when a child breaks a bone, it's hard to tell and if they're not acting very differently from usual, it can be impossible to tell.

That being said, scaphoid fractures usually cause pain and swelling at the base of the thumb, with the pain getting worse when the thumb is moved.

Bertil Vinnars, MD, et al. Nonoperative Compared with Operative Treatment of Acute Scaphoid Fractures. In The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery. June 2008. Volume 90. No. 6. Pp. 1176-1185.

When my daughter was five, she fell off the monkey bars in the playground and broke her forearm just above the wrist. At first, the doctor in emergency said that my daughter was fine and didn't need an x-ray. It was only when I insisted that they did the x-ray and found she had broken both bones just above the wrist. Why do you think they didn't believe us?

in

Treating children for arm breaks is one of the most common tasks for doctors who work in emergency rooms that deal with fractures. The forearm is vulnerable because of the way the arm reaches out to break a fall.

No Benefit Found from Operative Treatment of Acute Scaphoid Fracture

in

Usually, treatment of a break in the scaphoid, the largest bone in the hand, that hasn't moved or displaced is casting. This has an 85 percent to 90 percent success rate for treatment if the casting is done quickly. However, casting takes time and is inconvenient, and recovery of strength and movement following removal of the cast can take some time.

A Vascular Necrosis

Hello. I am a 26 year old female that has been diagnosed with AVN of the scafoid in my left wrist. I have had a surgery to try and repair the blood loss, but that did not help. The bone keeps getting worse. My doctor is trying to find another doctor to try some other surgical procedure on me, but has found no one yet. So, I have been waiting for 2 and 1/2 months in PAIN and waiting. I was wondering what the risks are for letting a wrist with AVN left untreated? Am I at higher risks for fractures?

Pain

I am a massage therapist and i have an extreme pain in my right wrist. The pain has shown up about a month ago, and my doctor diagnosed me with inflammation due to my job, and subscribed me with "arcoxia" pills. I took the pills for almost 2 weeks and the pain went away completely. Now my wrist is in pain again as it was a month ago. I cannot bent it fully forwards or backwards, and when i am trying to i am in a lot of pain. However my grip is ok and i dont feel the pain during a handshake lets say.
