Wrist

de Quervain's Remains a Puzzle

in

Stenosing tenosynovitis, or narrowing and inflammation of first extensor compartment of the wrist is called de Quervain's disease. This happens when the sheath of the tendons on the thumb side of your wrist are inflamed or swollen. The disorder affects more men than women, particularly in women who are pregnant or breast feeding. No-one knows what causes de Quervain's.

High Percentage of Partial Osseous Coalition

The carpal boss is a bony part that sticks out of the back of the hand, called the dorsum, at the second and/or third finger joint. Researchers aren't sure what causes it, whether it's caused by trauma or that it's degeneration of bone. They also don't know how common it is. Osseous coalition is the joining of bone.

Is carpal tunnel syndrome the same as other problems like Kienbock's disease?

in

Carpal tunnel syndrome and Kienbock's disease are two different disorders. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a repetitive stress disorder that causes irritation of the nerves that go from the forearm into the hand. Kienbock's disease is a disease of a bone in the wrist called the lunate. With Kienbock's disease, blood doesn't reach the bone to provide it with nutrients and the bone cells begin to die.

Are there a lot of things that can go wrong with the wrist, other than breaking it or something like that?

in

There are many disorders that can affect the wrist, from common diseases like arthritis to less common ones, such as Kienbock's disease. The wrist is made of very small bones and a small canal through which nerves go through to access the hand. If anything happens to any of the structures, the bone, ligaments, muscles, nerves, and soft tissues, you can end up with a good bit of pain and restricted movement and function of the hand.

Traditional Treatment of Kienbock's Disease Remains Most Satisfactory For Now

in

Kienbock's disease is a disorder that affects your bone. For unknown reasons, the blood supply to the lunate, a bone in the wrist is deprived of blood. Without the blood providing nutrients to the bone cells, the bone tissue begins to die. The symptoms include pain in the wrist and loss of motion, so often patients think they've sprained their wrist but they can't remember hurting it.

Scaphoid Fracture, Now Wrist Feels Tight?

I broke my scaphoid at the beginning of November. I wore a cast for 6-9 weeks, then I got a brace for about another 4 weeks. When they first took the cast off, my arm felt really strange and "tingly." I felt like I couldn't use my hand and my arm was really skinny. This was my first cast and I'm 30 years old. Now I went back to the doctor about a week ago and he did more x-rays and said he can't even see where the fracture was. I told him my wrist felt really tight like I couldn't really move it in the full range of motion as I can my other wrist, and that it was really tender feeling.

Wrist - Fractured scaphoid

I have avascular necrosis of my scaphoid bone due to an undetected fracture 12 months ago. My surgeon has recommended carrying out "proximal row carpectomy". I wondered if anyone has undergone this procedure and can give me an idea of length of recovery and final outcome, re pain relief and mobility. Any info would be very much appreciated. Regards

painful pea sized lump on inner aspect of wrist

For about the past week I have noticed a tiny lump (approx pea sized) under the skin on the inner aspect of my right wrist. It doesn't move when pushed from different angles, but is extremely tender to the touch. I don't have any tingling or pain in the hand. My wrist is becoming a bit tender in that area though. I also do not notice any grip weakness or dexterity issues.

Any advice on what this could be????

Thank you!!!!!!

I'm thinking about going for a wrist joint replacement for my terrible, terrible arthritis. I'd like to know what different surgeons have to say about this without getting three or four opinions. Is there any information like that available?

in

Not long ago, a systematic study was done to compare the results of arthrodesis (wrist fusion) to arthroplasty (wrist joint replacement). Complication rates for the two procedures were compared. The results for arthroplasty were a little bit hard to compare because surgeons used different techniques and different implants. Likewise, different ways to fuse the wrist were employed.

What's the Best Treatment for Painful and Severely Limiting Wrist Arthritis?

in

Imagine you have a severely painful wrist from arthritis that limits your everyday life.

Would you trade a few extra years of living in order to live your remaining years pain free? If you said, yes, how many years would equal the value of living pain free?

These are the questions given to hand surgeons comparing the results of one procedure over another.
