FAQI have a type of scoliosis that was severe enough to have surgery when I was a kid. Now my daughter has the same thing. When I had surgery, they used Harrington rods. The surgeon showed us how she would use screws instead of rods for my daughter's correction. It seems like those long rods would work better than the little screws they showed us. Will this really hold her? Matt05 weeks 1 day ago
FAQOur 13-year-old has a severe case of scoliosis. It appeared out of the blue. They tell us it can be genetic. But what makes the spine curve like that? Matt05 weeks 1 day ago
FAQOur 77-year-old mother is in the hospital with a broken leg. She had surgery late last night (Friday) and now nursing staff is waiting for the physical therapist to get her up and walking. The surgeon says he wants her up as soon as possible after the surgery to reduce complications. And she's supposed to be walking with a walker and medical staff everyday. But the therapist is only here this morning and there's reduced nursing coverage (and no therapist) tomorrow. If they have these policies in place, why don't they carry them out? I'm frustrated! FAQHelp, please! Dad is in the hospital for a hip fracture. They've pinned it and started him on physical therapy. The doctor and therapist insist he has to get up and walk on that leg. Dad says he needs a couple of days to rest and recouperate before getting up. What can we tell him to convince him to go along with this approach? Matt05 weeks 1 day ago
FAQOur 14-year-old son had surgery for osteochondritis dissecans after months of being on crutches and inactive. Unfortunately, the operation didn't work. We were so hopeful for him but it looks like the end of his snowboarding adventures. Any idea why the surgery didn't help? Other kids seem to bounce back, no problem. Matt05 weeks 1 day ago
FAQI am a 13 year old girl with knee pain that only goes away when I sit and do nothing. The doctor says I have osteochondritis dissecans. I looked this up on-line and found out it's from an injury or repetitive sports activity. I'm not a sports freak, ballerina, gymnast, or athlete of any kind. So why do I have this problem? FAQI just came back from a preop visit with a nurse from the surgery center where I am scheduled for back surgery later this week. It's supposed to be a simple decompression technique. They say I'll get antibiotics right before the operation in case of infection. How well does this work and how often do infections occur? I'm thinking about cancelling the surgery. The last thing I need right now is another medical problem. Matt05 weeks 1 day ago
FAQDad is 72 and had his first surgery ever less than two weeks ago. They did a laminectomy for spinal stenosis. Although his back pain was better at first, now it's getting worse everyday. Is this normal? How long do we wait for the pain to go away? Matt05 weeks 1 day ago
FAQDad fell over the weekend and was hospitalized with a broken hip. It's been 48-hours and he still hasn't had surgery. They say he has to have more tests done before they can operate. Is this normal? Matt05 weeks 1 day ago
FAQI am a designated prevention specialist in a small hospital setting. We see our fair share of broken bones and other emergencies involving senior citizens. We are focusing this month on hip fractures. I'm looking for any information about what other hospitals do to reduce complications after hip fracture repairs. Matt05 weeks 1 day ago
FAQI've been taking Coumadin for the last two years for a blood-clotting problem I have. Well, now I have to have hip surgery. The surgeon and my regular doctor have worked out a whole schedule for when I should stop taking the Coumadin before the operation and then go back on it afterwards. My brother had the same thing exactly but his surgeon just did the operation without worrying about the risk of bleeding. Why the difference in policies? Matt05 weeks 1 day ago
FAQWe suspect Mother had a heart attack and that's why she fell and broke her hip. Is there any way to check out our theory? Matt05 weeks 1 day ago
FAQI have some calcium deposits in the tendons of my shoulder. Nothing has worked to get rid of these. My doctor wants me to try shock therapy. I'm a little nervous to try something like this. How does it work and does it hurt? Matt05 weeks 1 day ago

FAQI'm having trouble finding someone who will take my back pain seriously and help me. The doctor says to exercise and it will get better. Well, I've tried exercise and the pain always comes back. Is it just me? Or do other people have this experience, too? Matt08 weeks 1 day ago
