Heavy Arm...Violent Spasms...Immobility - Any Ideas?
Imagine going for a regular, routine deep tissue massage and waking up the next day with an extreme heaviness in your right arm. You are unable to lift it without pain. Would you suspect a dislocated shoulder? We just thought he slept on it funny and dismissed it. Within 48 hours the heaviness became worse and the range of motion decreased and the electrocution type of "taser" muscle spasms began every time he would reach forward for something until the spasms were happening every 90 seconds. Within 4 days he was unable to sleep, eat or function normally due to the pain and spasms. His arm is rigid and locked by the side of his body partly due to the involuntary guarding to try and control the painful spasms. The swelling and inflammation began to build near his elbow and wrist until the spasms began to subside almost 10 days and many doctors, anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, morphine based pain killers and anti-spasmodics and 4 neurologists later.
The CT scan, the MRI of the back and neck and the EEG all are NORMAL and the EMG found his arm muscles to be perpetually contracted. What is unique is that even though his forearm and upper arm are locked in place, his right hand has almost complete function and sensitivity.
He is a computer professional for the past twenty years as well as a part time drummer for a band as well as self declared chef at home. He uses his hands more than most people and is only 38 years old.
He has never been in a car accident or fallen or been in the emergency room prior to this incident. And we don't have parkinson's, huntington's or epilepsy in our family history.
The craziest thing is that after approximately 10 weeks of enduring this, during a full physical, the doctor decided to do x-rays.
His shoulder is not only subluxed, or partially dislocated, his elbow is fractured, his rib is fractured and his shoulder is fractured!
Is this even possible? Can a deep tissue massage cause a shoulder to partially dislocate or sublux? Can a subluxed shoulder lead to violent spasms and can their force cause multiple fractures if one is heavily medicated? Has something similar to this happened to anyone you know?
We would appreciate hearing from you very much. He is now looking at extensive surgery due to the length of time since the injury; as scar tissue has already formed. And then a possible series of expensive Botox injections to "unlock" his arm temporarily while he gets physical therapy.
Thank you for your time in listening to our story.

I would recommend some blood tests to test for any deficiencies in calcium or other bone related issues. A deep tissue massage shouldn't cause fractures. That must have been one heck of a massage!
Unless the person was pulling on his arm, this should not have caused a subluxation or dislocation. A subluxed shoulder on the other hand can place pressure on the brachial plexus, which is a bundle of nerves that branch off to various parts of the upper extremity. Pressure on these nerves can cause twitching and spasms. The spasms may be a good thing in a way because it means the nerves are still firing.
Did he wack his arm when sleeping maybe that caused the various fractures? Spasms can get that violent at times, especially at night when the person is not aware of what is going on. Did he complain of any pain prior to the findings of the fractures?
Please keep us updated on his condition!
