Lateral Retinacular Release

I have been waiting for knee surgeries in both my knees since November. I am not even sure what my problem is, but I am getting a Lateral Retinacular Release. However, I am usually in a little bit of pain, but sometimes, it comes out of no where, and it is all the way up my leg, and sometimes even down into my calf. It throbs, and there is usually nothing I can do about it. I think this may be related to stress somehow, but I don't know how. What can I do to relieve/prevent pain?
