one week ago i tore a ligament in my ankle skateboarding. i jumped down 9 stairs and landed and my back foot came off. i heard it pop and there was a lot of swelling. for the first day i couldnt put weight on it but now i can. i have a cast now and have seen the doctor. i get the cast off next week and then have a splint and do therapy. how long do you think before i will be back to skating and possibly snowboarding?

Painful

I did something similar and it took me a very long time before I could do much. It all depends on how much pain you are willing to suffer. The typical amount of time to get back on track would probably be 6 weeks or so. My injury was pretty severe and it took me 3 or 4 months before I was able to run again and then it was painful and I had some other issues that were caused by the torn ligament, like my foot was rotating in and causing pain all the way up my shin. So, I guess it just depends on how sever the injury is.

Long Term Injury

This type of injury never goes away if no surgery is involved. You can strengthen but dont believe it has healed. All it takes in my case is to step on something uneven that kicks my ankle inward towards other foot and BAM I'm down. You as a young man you will heal quickly but the more times you reinjure the longer it will take. But what is interesting the pain will subside much faster. Not to exagerate but I have turned my right ankle at least twenty times since I was 19...now 56. The way I strengthened my ankle was to sit poolside with a swimfin on both legs and slowly kicked for ten minutes at first and lenghening the workout until I could kick for thirty minutes. The ankle felt fine...until I returned it...then it was very painful. I had a friend who had surgery that did an excellant job at repair and he returned to playing basketball after about 6 months of rehab! Good Luck and be carefull.
