Reoccuring Ankle Injury
When I was young (19), I "turned" my ankle very badly playing basketball. Ankle swelled twice to three times it's normal size and had internal bleeding. Doctor said I tore several ligaments and since I had no insurance I would have to do the best I could. My rehab consisted of resting for about two weeks hen placing a swim fin on the foot and doing resistance training in a pool over the summer. That was over 37 years ago and since that time I have turned the same ankle numerous times (+15). The pain is horrible but subsides in few minutes and I can resume walking. The swelling will go away in a day or two. It doesn't take much for me to turn the ankle over again either. So I have to be very aware of where I'm placing my foot at all times. What worries me is as I get older the reality of falling down and hurting something else more critical! I sill do not have insurance and so I'm at the mercy of life and am careful at what and how I do anything that involves my right ankle. I still am active but do not do any running or jumping. Love to wade fish and in doing so I feel I'm getting plenty of resistance training while wading in the soft sand or (yuk) mud. But I know the ankle is not going to get any better due to this type of exercise. I really doubt there is anything that can be done short of surgery. So I'm wondering at my current age of 56 would surgery be worth it, and what kind of rehabilatation would be involved, as well as what costs should be expeced. Is there a certain type of every day brace that may work in lieu of surgery? Please give me some ideas.
