Pilon fracture and ankle arthroplasty

I am 30 years old and 6 months ago i had a pilon fracture. My tibia's lower end broke in several pieces so they had to be held in place by an external fixator hybrid. I had it on for 105 days.
A month later, as i was feelling ready to start pressing my leg and walk, i did it. I was walking preety normally for a week, but one day i felt so much pain i couldn't even get up from bed. My doctor told me to stay in bed and take counterirritant pills. Since then i use crutches and whenever i try to apply some more weight or walk, i feel the same pain.
The x-ray shows arthritis, and the joint surface is in bad condition since the ankle joint has not have an even space between talus and tibia.
The doctor said the word arthroplasty... Is it the right choice for a man at my age or is it more preferable at older people? Will i be able to walk, work and live like before with a metal piece in my ankle?
Thank you.
