Revision of total hip

I had a total hip replacement in 1980. I've been having pain in that hip/upper leg for past 3 mos. After x-rays & a CT scan I've been told the cup is loosening and I need a revision. They want to replace everything but I want to know why the cup can't just be replaced because the rod/ball in my thigh is secure. Why isn't this possible?
