permanent nerve damage???

Hi. I was recently told by my surgeon that I had waited too long to have lumbar decompression surgery and that my nerve damage was likely permanent. Although he says I am healing well from the surgery, my legs seem to be getting no better and I continue to feel numbness in my back. What should I expect from my permanent nerve damage?
