What are the benefits of lumbar total disc replacement rather than a fusion?

The greatest benefit is likely the maintenance of range of motion with total disc replacement. This is thought to decrease the likelihood of accelerated degeneration of adjacent levels as seen following fusion. Accelerated degeneration can sometimes necessistate extension of the fusion.
