Why do doctors tell you to exercise if your lower back hurts?

When someone has a sore lower back, the usual first approach to treatment is using medications to relieve the pain and exercise to help strengthen the back. However, when a doctor tells you to exercise, he or she doesn't mean just any type of exercise - there are certain strengthening and conditioning exercises that can be done safely that don't further injure your back. Most of the time, doctors will refer patients with lower back pain to physiotherapy so they can learn the proper techniques and types of exercises to strengthen the back.
