I was told that after my back surgery to repair pars defects I would have to wear a corset. Is that really important?

Yes, it is important. While your surgery may include the placement of hardware or bone grafting, it will not be strong enough to support the repair. It is more likely that the bones will not heal properly, and the hardware may break if you do not follow directions for wearing your corset.
